The Essex Herald

Home of Pop Quiz and Essex News and now incorporating The Landfill Tawny Echo

Regular readers of the Essex Herald will know we love to listen to BBC Essex whenever we get the chance. BBC Essex is a great local radio station managed and presented by highly seasoned professionals. Not the sort of people who would read out silly names on the air.

Well that’s what we thought until we was handed a secret file by a person who is known only as “The Phantom”. The phantom seems to spend all his time thinking up silly names to e-mail the presenters with. The presenters are professional people and would not fall for such obvious silliness, or would they?

No way would they read out a name like Betty Swollocks

One of my favourite presenters who when she first started with BBC Essex received a few calls knocking her as a presenter. Luckily the gallant phantom came to her aid. Could he make her talk about her knockers live on air? Surely not

What about Nicholas Bird? Every schoolboy chuckles at that one. He’ll never get away with that.

The phantom then moved on to more creative subterfuge and invented the name Tess Tickles. Thinking this one would fly under the BBC radar he   e-mailed in

OK, I can forgive them that one. You can get away with anything once but never twice

OK, maybe twice but by now the BBC surely must have a big notice on the wall with all the names not to say on air. Perhaps so but they never told the presenter of the gardening programme

At last, those extra people they employed to sift through the e-mails looking for embarrassing words finally did their stuff

So that is the end of the phantoms little games. Wait a minute, surely not. Has the sign fallen down? Are the grownups on coffee break? Oh no, the phantom strikes again
